A book that has been published by the Minnesota American Legion as a fund raiser for the World War II Memorial has topped 2,500 in sales in its first five months off the presses.
War Stories, Accounts of Minnesotans Who Defended their Nation, is a compilation of stories about Minnesotans that have previously appeared in the Minnesota Legionnaire.
The book sells for $22.50 including shipping and handling. An order form is located on this page. Books may also be purchased through the Minnesota American Legion's website: mnlegion.org.
"Raising money for the World War II Memorial is one of my projects this year," Department Commander Don Hayden said. "This book is an excellent way of both supporting the memorial and preserving the stories of some of our great Minnesota veterans."
The World War II Memorial will go before the Capitol Architectural Board at some future time for site selection. Once the site is picked, there will be a design competition. The winner of that competition will be announced in the future.
About $450,000 has been raised thus far for the memorial, and the project will probably cost about $1 million.
With the sale of the first 2,500 books, the Legion project has now raised about $50,000 for the Memorial.
The book is a soft-bound, coffee table sized book with 184 pages.
